Programs for young readers

  • EveryMon

    Baby Rhyme Time

    Twenty minutes of Mother Goose rhymes, board books, shakers, and movement with Sheila, for infants through age 3. Summer sessions run June 22 through August 10.

    Lego Builders Club

    We supply the bricks and the challenges; creations go on display for a week. Ages 3–13.

    Make-It/Take-It Craft

    A rotating project each week. Recent favorites: chia heads, patriotic wind socks, and air-dry clay flower bowls.

In the Children’s Room

The Bruce McMillan Corner

Nine original hand-tinted photographs from Grandfather’s Trolley hang on permanent display in our Children’s Room, a gift of their maker. Bruce McMillan, the Katahdin Award winning author and illustrator, has been a supporter of this library for more than thirty years.

Raised in Bangor and Kennebunk and a graduate of the University of Maine, McMillan worked as a producer-director in public broadcasting and as caretaker of McGee Island before turning to children’s books. He has made more than 45 of them, including Nights of the Pufflings, The Baby Zoo, Fire Engine Shapes, Wild Flamingos, and Salmon Summer, and he has written more children’s books set in Iceland than any other U.S. author.

In 2007 he received the Katahdin Award for lifetime achievement in Maine children’s literature. He lives in Shapleigh, just up the road. Come see the photographs, then borrow his books from the shelf below them.

Summer reading for grades 6–12 runs through August 15 under the banner of Monster Plants, and teens can earn community service hours helping at the library. Call 207-324-4624 or email sdube@springvalelibrary.org to get involved.
